The “Sheltered Garden Within” is Rustic Elegance in the 100 yr. old family barn. As a child this area was the calf pen with a wall mounted feeder. It was closed in by a slatted pen, which was removed to open the space. A 1950′s window with a louvered screen on the bottom worked perfectly for allowing natural light & air circulation. Originally there was no opening, just some badly worn boards that raccoons had found their way in. So, I decided to repair the wall & cut an insert for the recycled window. The view is a 90 yr. old concrete silo with a little “grotto” like space. Since the side of silo faces east & no sun hits the surface, it has an amazing covering of green moss growing on it. In remembrance of my Dad, I placed a small earthen cherub to stand watch on the silo ledge outside the window. My Dad was born a farmer’s son and lived & worked the majority of his life in this barn.
The chandelier was recycled from an estate sale. When the sun shines in and hits the 200+ crystals there is a rainbow of color that radiates on the interior of the barn. A beautiful element of surprise to all visitors. Besides the lamp, the table is also reclaimed.
Watch & follow my next phase of repurposing - building a labyrinth within these barn walls.
stunning – I love how you are able mesh together the honouring of the past, of your father, and of nature into a very beautiful space. I am sure that a person entering this barn would be overwhelmed with emotions.
Love it.

Thank you, I am happy you enjoyed it. When I created this space I had no idea how others would respond or their experience. It has been truly amazing. Emotions range from joy of fond memories to tears of healing a loss loved one. The barn is serene, simple, & raw.
that’s what I imagined .. powerful stuff!
bravo to you for creating such a space.
